SEO is actually: Search Engine Optimization. It does require some research, studying, and keeping away from those who say SEO is dead . But, it is not very difficult to learn and is a free way to promote your web-site or blog.

All it will cost you is time. Let me give you my number one free SEO tip... Write and develop your own websites, blogs or articles.

Use your own words and try your best to mix in your most important keywords during your writing.

SEO for the beginner starts with your own keywords.

Below is how I do it. Here is proof that I know what I am writing about. Try Googling "good content websites". Go ahead I'll wait....

As you can see my site is listed on the top. I actually have several websites with hundreds of keywords that rank well in all of the major Search Engines.

Search Engine Optimization for the beginner

First there is On-Page Optimization.

Domain Name - Keywords in your domain name will help with search engine rankings.
The description in your title should contain your primary keywords.
Header tags should be h1, h2 and h3.
Your content...should have your primary keywords sprinkled throughout your page without over saturating them.

Here is a fictional website that we will be using: www.yourwebsitecontent.com

Body Text - Yes, the text in the body of your website is important. Use the same keywords that you used in the title tag. Insert it in the first paragraph and in this case it is "Your Website Content and More". And a few more times throughout your page. Be sure to add other words that mean the same thing. Instead of website you could use blog and instead of content use substance.

H1 Tags - The H1 tag is a heading tag and it should be used as a header tag. It needs to be inserted into the top of the first paragraph. Most search engine will regard this tag as the first important header tag.

Domain Names - If at all possible try your best to use a .com extension domain name. It is still possible to obtain good Niche Domain keywords. Dogtraining.com is taken but not trainabledogs.com and is still available.

Page Names - Long Tailed Keywords. This works extremely well and should always be used when you name a new website page. Here is your example: www.yourwebsitecontent.com/moregoodcontentyourwebsite.htm
But do not over do it. And, if at all possible stay away from hyphens or dashes.

H2-H5 Tags - These are more SEO tags and should be used as the heading for paragraph 2 through 5 Simple enough right?

Meta Tag Usage - The other meta tags such as the description, and keyword tags are not used by the major search engines any more. However many smaller search engines still use them. Any extra traffic from these engines are still worthwhile.

The Title Tag is THE most IMPORTANT tag in your web page. It is what your potential visitors will read in Google's organic search results. Below is a graphic of my own listing on google. Search for "Free SEO for the beginner" without quotes.

Put the Title and Your Keywords in your HTML

Title Usage - Are you using title tags in your website? If not you should be. What are title tags? They look like this:

Use your most important keyword in the title of your page.
<title>Your Title Keywords</title>
Put your keywords in the description tag:
<description>description of website</description>

Put important keywords in the keywords tag:
<keywords>you keywords here, My keywords,morekeywords,keyword phrase</keywords>.

Be sure to add your primary keywords in the first paragraph and bold it. Don't try to out smart the search engines just do your best to write normally this is what google, yahoo and msn are looking for...good original content.

Use other words that match your primary keywords. This is so easy to do. Just use other words that are similar to your primary keywords. Here are examples: Cars - Use Autos, Money - Revenue or cash, Dog training - Use animal or pets.
